Challenge

In recent years, Seattle has experienced unprecedented and ongoing growth in many of its neighborhoods, resulting in cumulative impacts throughout the city. Multiple construction projects within proximity to each other, or construction hubs, create especially acute impacts for travelers, businesses and residents. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) recognized the need for identifying and assisting neighborhoods and stakeholders affected by and engaged in this construction and development.

Solution

SDOT contracted with Nyhus Communications to facilitate a broad proactive engagement with an array of stakeholders to provide input on impacts and counsel on tactics and strategies for construction mitigation. This engagement initiative, the Access Seattle Marketing and Outreach for Community and Construction Support program, began in the fall of 2014 and concluded in April 2015.

Results

• Provided a set of recommendations to substantively inform ongoing SDOT community engagement.
• Successful collaboration event focused on developing better technology-based solutions to improve commuter’s ability to navigate congestion.
• The Seattle Department of Transportation presented its Swift and Certain Enforcement measures to Access Seattle stakeholders for review.
